Welcome! This repository holds the strategic goals of the Open Home Foundation, set by its board members. These goals guide the direction of Home Assistant, ESPHome, Music Assistant, and other Open Home Foundation projects.
This repository is public as part of our "Building in the Open" initiative: we believe the strategic direction of the open home should be visible to the community that builds and depends on it.
Important
Writing goals is reserved to members of the Open Home Foundation.
Discussion is open to everyone β we encourage the community to comment on goals, share perspectives, and ask questions. However, only members of the Open Home Foundation can create and edit goals.
Goals are the strategic objectives of the Open Home Foundation. They define where we want to go, while the roadmap defines how we get there.
Each goal:
- Is set and maintained by the Open Home Foundation board
- Reflects our values: local control, privacy, choice, and sustainability
- Is linked to one or more Opportunities in the roadmap repository that work towards achieving it
Goals (this repository) β set by the board, define strategic direction
βββ Opportunities (roadmap) β shaped by the product team, define initiatives
βββ Feature requests β submitted by the community in project repositories
When the product team creates or refines a roadmap opportunity, it is linked to the goal it supports. This makes it possible to trace any piece of work back to the strategy behind it.
- Discuss: Comment on goals to share your perspective β community input matters
- Follow: Watch this repository to stay informed about the foundation's strategic direction
- Influence the roadmap: Submit feature requests in the relevant project's feature requests repository (see the roadmap README for links)
- Contribute: Help realize these goals by contributing to Home Assistant, ESPHome, or Music Assistant
- Goals are deliberately few and long-lived β they change rarely, and only by board decision
- Not every idea belongs here: feature suggestions go to the project repositories, strategic initiatives go to the roadmap
- Please respect everyone involved, and be mindful of the time and energy others have invested
- This space is covered by our Code of Conduct
